We received our accreditation as a Living Wage employer back in 2017. This recognises our commitment to pay every member of our staff the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended rate as a minimum salary rate.

What is the Living Wage?

The Living Wage is an independent movement of businesses, organisations and people who believe a fair day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. The Living Wage is independently calculated each year based on what employees and their families need to live. It is an hourly rate that provides a benchmark for employers that voluntarily choose to ensure their staff earn a wage that meets their cost of living. We are proud to have made the choice to close the gap between what people need to live and the government minimum wage.

Our values

It’s important that our values are reflected in everything that we do, and this includes paying our staff responsibly. Not only does a fair wage benefit the staff at our company, it also makes perfect business sense.

Paying the Living Wage shows that we value and respect our staff, which is reciprocated through the extra pride they take in their roles. Rewarding staff for their hard work gives them a greater sense of morale, and we find this makes Newsdirect a positive and productive place to work. Contented employees also contribute to a lower staff turnover, meaning staff develop strong working relationships and provide a consistently high level of service.

A Living Wage for our Interns 

The Living Wage accreditation does not require employers to pay the Living Wage to interns. However, here a Newsdirect, we value the contribution of all our staff and are fully committed to paying our interns, trainees and support staff the Living Wage.

Internships provide valuable work experience and training to those starting out in their careers, and we regularly welcome interns to the Newsdirect team. Unfortunately, there is increasing concern around the exploitative use of unpaid interns to carry out the regular work of employees, particularly among political monitoring companies. This is wholly unfair, preventing those who cannot afford to work for free from getting that all-important foot in the door. We’re proud to help students and graduates tackle the challenges they face as they take the first steps in their careers and hope to set an example to other employers.
